1988 Topps cards are very famous. There are baseball cards, football and hockey card sets for this year. The baseball ones are the most well-known as they came into the market when it was near its height of the 1980s. For a page of listings of the items, click below for a great list. Now that we are in 2008 and almost 2009, these cards are officially 20 years old. They are going on vintage material my friends, though it is widely held that there are many of these cards in existence as Topps reportedly ran up the presses for this release. Nonetheless, it is my personal opinion that one day these cards will be significantly more sought after than they are today. While they may not increase in value as much as cards from say 1952 did, I think there is still a lot of upside potential remaining for these cards. Football from this year is a bit better, whereas Hockey is already quite valuable in its own right from this year. We will explore all three sets.
'88 baseball has a few things going for it. The hall of famers in the set and the great design for the year do it a favor. The player selection is great, with many key players such as Jose Canseco (significant since it is near his rookie year), Mark McGwire (same as Jose Canseco example), Nolan Ryan, Don Mattingly, Rickey Henderson, George Brett, Barry Bonds second year card and a rookie card of future hall of famer Tom Glavine. You can expect to pay about $10-$20 for a wax box, cases of unopened packs, boxes, vending material and everything is still easily available online. If you have the storage space, you might be doing yourself a favor getting these at the prices they are at now. Then again, that is no guarantee of future value, just an opinion from me (long time collector).
The football set has a Bo Jackson rookie card, a Vinny Testaverde rookie card, several hall of famers like Joe Montana, Steve Young, Jerry Rice, Dan Marino, John Elway and many more. It is quite a nice set and price levels are about 1.5-2 times higher than baseball and it still is very affordable. I would recommend this set as well as 1987 Topps Football already has started increasing in value a bit based on going prices online.
1988-89 hockey is incredible. The Brett Hull rookie card and several other rookies highlight the set. Brett Hull is by far the most valuable rookie in 1988 with his card booking at about $30 last time I looked it up. Wayne Gretzky also has a $20 or so card in the set as well. Wax Boxes of this year will cost $100-$150 on Ebay. They are fun boxes to open as the set is small and you probably can get more than one Hull in the box. Even better is that he is double printed, meaning twice as many were produced compared to non double printed cards.
