This 1987 sports cards article is brought to you by My Baseball Card Space, a baseball card community dedicated to providing you with the resources to find your favorite rookie cards including ones from sets new and old. Also, above this paragraph on the banner, you can see many articles and those are from this site, you can read all of the 325+ site articles free as well, to learn many more facts about sports cards and baseball cards and sports in general. This article will focus on 1987 sports cards including the brands Topps, Fleer, O-Pee-Chee, and Donruss. In basketball, the 1987-88 Fleer set includes rookie cards of Ron Harper and A.C. Green, as well as the highly sought after and valuable second year card of Michael Jordan. In hockey, Luc Robitaille rookies are highly sought after from both Topps and O-Pee-Chee, with 1987-88 O-Pee-Chee being more valuable. There also is the site of Football Card which has many rookie football cards.  Baseball card collections easily are bought and sold here and if you browse the pages, you will find many things to do here and the community is free for everyone to join.  The home page of the sister site, which has article summaries of my baseball card space, is also a great place to locate your favorite unopened boxes and collectibles.

These cards are valuable.  1987-88 Fleer Basketball boxes cost $500+ per box of 36 packs on ebay or at whichever place you can find them offered.  The key to the unopened boxes is that you can get 3+ Jordans per box and 3+ stickers of him as well.  A graded gem mint Jordan is worth quite a bit.

There are not that many rookie cards in this set as the year before had and as the year after has.  It does contain good second year cards including the Michael Jordan and all of the rookies from 1986-87.  A complete set will probably cost you about $200, maybe a bit less.  They are worth it and should be in any collector's collection if they can afford it.  Besides the fact that it is a second year card of Michael Jordan, the card and the cards in the set are extremely difficult to find.  They were not overproduced like baseball cards of the era.

Happy collecting and if you have a set or a box of these, you have a nice group of cards that are valuable.

Here are some of the highlights of the 1987-88 Fleer Basketball Card set according to the Beckett Plus Price Guide for Spring 2006 (the price indicated is the card's book value).

#9 Charles Barkley $15
#11 Larry Bird       $20
#35 Julius Erving   $12   (that is Julius Erving's last year playing)
#56 Magic Johnson $25
#59 Michael Jordan $100
#80 Hakeem Olajuwon $15
#97 Detlef Schrempf rookie card $10

I wanted to make it a point to review this 1987 Topps Football set because I believe it to be undervalued.  It also has many rookie and mid priced star cards in it.  It is still widely available but not as much as 1988 and 1989 Topps Football.  It can still be purchased and is affordable online.

Some of the top rookie cards in 1987 Topps Football are Doug Flutie (pictured in the following link)http://www.mybaseballcardspace.info/?cmd=viewphoto&id=1&viid=10
Randall Cunningham, Jim Kelly, Jim Everett and others.  The thing to watch for that is an intangible attribute is that new members are inducted into the hall of fame yearly and come out of nowhere sometimes.  (ie Ray Childress)  This set also has star cards of Joe Montana, Dan Marino, John Elway, Jerry Rice (second year card!) and many others that book solidly in Beckett ($5-$8).

It is priced at about $30-$40 per wax box on ebay and in online stores.  It is fairly priced and when you consider that a psa 10 graded rookie card or star card will bring upwards of $100 or much more, it is a great deal.  You can also sometimes find vending boxes and wax or cello cases which may even be a better deal.  There are sales you can watch for to maximize your bang for the buck on them.  Kruk Cards is a great source on ebay and they always have these kinds of football cards.  1988 and 1989 Topps are more widely available yet still more expensive and better in my opinion than 1990-1995 Topps Football because the 1991 Topps Football set does not have Brett Favre's rookie card in it.

In conclusion, this is a great set to own.  We would love to hear your comments to feel free to reply to this post after registering on our main site (link at the bottom on the signature) and do not worry it is totally free with no gimmicks.  The complete set of these cards can be purchased for $15-$30 and is great to put away.  I do not have one of this year myself, though I do have the Jim Kelly rookie card, the Cunningham, Flutie and most of the star cards.  I am missing most of the commons to finish the set though, and would consider it worthwhile to finish.

Here is a detailed summary of 1987 Topps Football rookie cards.  Here are the top rookie cards and their book values as of the November/December 2006 Beckett Football Plus Price Guide.  Bold denotes key rookie cards in my opinion and helpful links are put below the prices (these have all been bolded, you have to find the forum post with this in it to find them)

1987 Topps cards for sale

1987 Topps Baseball cards feature the rookie cards of Barry Bonds, Rafael Palmeiro, Will Clark, Barry Larkin and Bo Jackson.  There is also a nice second year card of Mark McGwire.  The cards are very affordable as it was easily available when it was produced.  The cards boast an attractive woodback design and wooden color frames bordering the card.  Out of the Topps sets in the 1980's, this set is widely believed to not be very good due to overproduction as far as its investment potential.  This set is great to put away due to tbe Barry Bonds rookie card, but will probably not increase in value as much as other sets in the 1980's.

The cards feature a nice selection of rookies as mentioned and also of many hall of famers and former all stars including Roger Clemens (third year card), Don Mattingly, Cal Ripken, Pete Rose, George Brett, Nolan Ryan and more.  As for attractiveness of the set design and player selection, the set does well.

The key downside to this set is the perception of overproduction.  When baseball cards became popular in the latter part of the 1980's, Topps cranked up the presses to keep up with demand.  This resulted in a flood of cards to the market, and cards from the years 1986-1990 at the very least are widely believed to be too overproduced by collectors.  Right now, a wax box of this year will cost you less than $20 in most cases, with a complete set coming in at just below that.  PSA and BGS graded gem mint cards carry premiums and are still worth putting away.  I personally have put away a set of 1987 Topps that I was able to build.

The card set has some good rookies and stars, in my opinion you should not go out and buy tons of it, but saving a set or two and some rookie cards might be a good idea for the future.

When most sports card collectors are looking for cards to get of a player, a first year card is typically at the top of their wish list.  A lot of these players have cards that are very affordable still, and now may be a great time to invest in the cards of players as it has been years since baseball cards have been in the demand that they were in the 1980's and early 1990's, and one never knows if and when that will happen again.
